How to check for Diastasis Recti
Diastasis Rescti is defined as a separation/weakening of the rectus abdominus connective tissue (the linea alba). During pregnancy the hormone relaxin allows for ligaments to become more lax making room for baby to grow. As your belly expands during pregnancy, the connective tissue gets stretched out, allowing the rectus abdominis to pull apart and separate down the middle. 100% of pregnant people will experience some degree of diastasis recti which is completely normal and expected.
After childbirth the way in which the connective tissue heals varies from person to person. This is based on a variety of different factors such as your activity level, type of exercises performed, subsequent pregnancies, childbirth, and genetics. To manage and rehab your Diastasis Recti during and after pregnancy it is important to assess where you are and begin practicing core breathing techniques. No matter how long it’s been since you’ve had a baby Diastasis Recti can still be present.
